ARCHIVE - Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl lays down his office as the prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate with a farewell speech in Mainz, Germany, 2 December 1976. The then minister of culture Dr. Bernhard Vogel (R) was named as the successor. Kohl went into parliament as leader of the opposition in Bonn. Kohl passed away at the age of 87 in Eggershaim on the 16th of June 2017. He was chancellor for 16 years and head of the party CDU for quarter of a century.
